Epidermal Hairs (Spermatophytes)

Epidermal hair commonly encountered. Probably from an aquatic vascular plant.

Epidermal hair from Bow Lake, Barrington, NH USA

Epidermal hair from Bigsby Lake, Olmstedville, NY USA

Epidermal hair from leaf petiole ("stalk") of Nymphaea (water lily) encrusted with oxalic acid, a potential source of the hairs often encountered in water samples. However, this hair appears to be opaque while those I've seen have been transparent and hollow. SEM (false color) posted online.

Epidermal hairs ("scales") from Eleagnus (olive) leaves. Image by Terry Ashley, Univ. of Tennessee at Knoxville, TN USA, posted at microscopyu.com (1982).
